As AI tools like ChatGPT become embedded in the creative and administrative processes of cultural work, artists and funders alike must grapple with ethical, practical, and philosophical questions. This session will explore the nuanced landscape of AI-assisted grant applications, considering accessibility, artistic integrity, labor, and the responsibility of funders.
Participants will begin with a hands-on activity to reflect on how they encounter AI in their practice, followed by a panel discussion featuring thought leaders in AI ethics, artistic labor, and philanthropy. The session will conclude with working groups to co-create values-based guidelines for funders and grantees navigating the rise of AI.
This session provides a space to critically examine the role of AI in grantmaking and equip funders to support ethical, artist-centered approaches to its use.
Grantmakers in the Arts is the only national association of both public and private arts and culture funders in the US, including independent and family foundations, public agencies, community foundations, corporate philanthropies, nonprofit regrantors, and national service organizations – funders of all shapes and sizes across the US and into Canada. Through storytelling, dialogue, and site visits, we will gather as a trusted forum to envision bold futures and reaffirm the power of artists in movements for justice. Join GIA members, colleagues, and allies from October 19-22 in the Twin Cities, Minnesota—where movements take root, where stories shape history, and where the work of solidarity continues.
